Port de Kercabellec

A beaching port, Kercabellec enjoyed a major boom thanks to salt production. Salt production developed in Mesquer over the centuries, reaching its peak in the 19th century. Used mainly to preserve fish and meat, salt was shipped to the port of Kercabellec and exported all along the Atlantic seaboard. In those days, 150 to 200 ships passed through the port! Mesquéra's trade thus developed, and a whole society of cap-horniers and customs officers was formed, with up to 40 customs officers in the commune. The small harbor office, once the customs office, bears witness to the intensity of the salt industry and trade.

Tour of the Mès salt marshes

The Guérande region boasts some 1,850 hectares of salt marshes, divided into two basins some 20 kilometers apart: the Mès basin (350 hectares) and the Batz-Guérande basin (1,500 hectares).

Le Traict de Pen-Bé
